Extendable Frameworks for Knowledge, Model/Behavior, and Use Cases

The structuring and management of aviation knowledge is very complex, but can be managed through the use of frameworks. Frameworks minimize domain complexity by providing formal documented models and guides for lifecycle development and reuse. They also provide a way for analysts to manage the complexity of domain and model behavior. AIRMM includes frameworks for Knowledge, Model/Behavior, and the Use Cases.

The knowledge framework provides a way to organize knowledge relative to the aviation domain and the analytical model base. The framework provides a mapping of related aviation domain behavior using standardized semantics. The knowledge base uses the knowledge framework to partition sub-areas of knowledge, overall aviation domain behavior, existing model behavior, and historic scenario information. The knowledge framework and maturation of domain knowledge provides guidance in the development of the model/behavior and the use/case frameworks.

The model/behavior framework provides a formalized mapping of aviation domain behaviors to an existing model base. The model/behavior framework is used to capture behavior of the modeling components. The model/behavior framework provides a guide which software developers can use to create and manage new model behavior. The model/behavior framework is external to the knowledge base, which allows model development without the need to interface with the knowledge system.

The Use Case framework provides a standardized representation of modeling scenarios or use cases for modeling the aviation domain. The Use Case framework is composed of information that describes particulars of scenarios and rules. The Use Case framework supports standardized scenarios to verify and validate new modeling behavior. The Use Case framework works closely with the scenario instances that are managed and controlled within the DoD Technical Framework for M&S.
