Egg Harbor Township High School’s Try-Math-A-Lon team, the Champions, lived up to their name by winning the local Try-Math-A-Lon championship held on January 14 at the William J. Hughes Technical Center.

The annual competition is sponsored by the South Jersey Alumni Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. Dr. Anne Harlan, director of the FAA Technical Center, prefaced the competition with words of encouragement to the students. Dr. Harlan congratulated all of the students for participating in the Try-Math-A-Lon and urged the students to continue to achieve and excel in math and the sciences. The competition was also attended by employees and friends of the Technical Center  who were interested in watching students display their academic prowess.

The Champions demonstrated to the audience that their name was well chosen. The team, which consisted of Jennifer Addo (daughter of AOS-340’s Paul Addo), Chun Calvin Chin, Amphon Pepper and Stacie Yee, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

While representing their schools with strong performances, the other teams, which included the Lone Warriors (Yoonieh Ahn, Joon Lee, Chung Mike Cheng [alternate], William Le and Hirsh Singh) also from Egg Harbor Township High School and the Academic Greyhounds from Pleasantville High School (Yong Han, Hiren Darji, Sejal Patel, Ketan Raval, and Ralhan Patel), could not overcome the Champions’ early lead.

All of the participants are to be commended for their hard work and dedication to the program. Competing is not easy. Students must put in long, hard hours of study and preparation time. Also deserving of special recognition are the team advisors -- Dinita Bailey (both Egg Harbor teams) and B.J. Chadwick (Pleasantville).

The Champions kept their momentum going after their local victory and proceeded to capture the regional title, thus qualifying them to participate in the national championship.  The team will travel in March to join other contestants from the United States in this next level of competition to be held in Anaheim, CA, at the NSBE National Convention.

The Champions will be trying to become the second local high school to capture a national championship. Pleasantville won the national title in 2001.

The Try-Math-A-Lon is a mathematics-based competition for high school students. Participating teams showcase their academic abilities by solving math problems on the level of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).  The competition was created to assist minority students in the preparation for standardized math tests, such as the SAT.  Another goal of the competition is to encourage minority students to consider math and the sciences as a collegiate major and to increase the number of minorities in math and science-based professions.

The competition is just one of the many programs that NSBE hosts. If you are interested in learning more about the organization and its programs, contact Jamaal Lipscomb at extension 7812. Or, join chapter members at one of our meetings held the first Tuesday of each month on the 4th floor of building 316 in conference room 405.

A special thanks goes to Noble Foods for their donation of a hot breakfast, to volunteers, NSBE members, the Try-Math-A-Lon Committee, and to our organizer and facilitator of the event, Devon Thompson for the success of the event.
