	“I am very pleased to inform you that the Senate confirmed President Bush’s nomination of Bobby Sturgell to be the new deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration,” said FAA Administrator Marion C. Blakey on March 20. Robert Sturgell is the No. 2 official in the FAA, where he served in recent months as senior counsel to the Administrator, a position in which he advised her on policy and management issues, and on capital programs and modernization efforts. Mr. Sturgell came to the FAA from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), where he was the primary advisor to Ms. Blakey when she was the chairperson of the NTSB. Prior to joining the NTSB, Mr. Sturgell was a flight officer and a flight operations supervisor for United Airlines. Mr. Sturgell is an attorney and practiced aviation law at the Washington, DC law firm of Shaw Pittman. He was a Republican candidate for the Maryland State Senate in 1998. He served in the Navy as an aviator for nine years and was a staff member of the Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun. He is a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the University of Virginia School of Law.
