Let's Get Physical

By Janet Kinsell

Left….right….left is the sound of 20 some employees who “Walked This Way” for 30 minutes around Buildings 300 and 316.  It was the beginning of the William J. Hughes Technical Center’s Federal Women Program’s “Let’s Get Physical” Series designed to improve fitness and provide stress relief during National Women’s History Month celebration. The series consisted of eight physical events.

Maudie Powell, ACF-1, proposed the series to Carolyn Pokres, FWP manager. Latasha Reddick, WHM chairperson, and Phyliss Schlegel, ACX-52, were enthusiastic volunteers and supporters in planning and presenting the series. Ms. Powell explained that “Let’s Get Physical” was created to help employees become aware of ways in which they could release their daily stress and become more physically fit. “We met every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 to 12:00 throughout the month of March,” said Ms. Powell. “It was a good start in trying to get people physically fit and into a fitness routine. There was a variety of exercises provided to accommodate the different likes of our employees. Some liked to walk, others preferred Yoga, and all of us enjoyed the release of daily stress from a massage. It was healthy and fun, and it only took 30 minutes!”

Participants made comments on the activities such as, “I’ve never had anyone to walk with before;” “Will we do this again next year?;” “Can we do this all summer long?;” and “The passes to the fitness centers were great!” Yes, the guest instructors provided participants free passes to their fitness centers!

Ms. Powell said, “From walking the building property, many people found stairways and buildings they didn’t know existed. Others found new friends they had only said hello to in the halls. Doing activities like this brings people together. I hope many of them will continue.”

If you would like for these activities to continue, send an e-mail to Lana Haug in ACH (Lana.Haug@FAA.gov).

A special “thank you” is extended to the program participants, FWP supporting members, Phyliss Schlegel who also served as an instructor, and the guest instructors from Tilton and Shore Fitness Centers who independently donated their time to conduct the sessions.
