While President George Bush has officially declared the war in Iraq over, the troops who have already demonstrated a job well done, are still in harm's way. In this issue of the Intercom we would like to recognize and pay homage to those who continue to serve in the armed services and are loved ones of our friends, co-workers and colleagues here at the William J. Hughes Technical Center. Alan Gregory
My son, Les M. Gregory, (pictured above with wife, Alana, and daughter, Ashley) is assigned to the 527 Fighter Squadron out of Cannon AFB, NM. Les is currently completing training at Luke AFB in Phoenix. He graduated from Absegami HS in Absecon, NJ in 1993 where he played football and was editor of the literary magazine. A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in 1997, Les commanded 3rd Group. Les received awards for Top Gun Air-to-Air Combat and Top Gun Air-to-Ground Combat in the T-38 attack course and the Outstanding Officer Award in the F-16 weapons course. Les, Alana, and the kids love to go skiing and hike in the mountains. I am a very proud father and grandfather.
ACT-10
I have several family members who have served in the United States Military, including my husband and me. Currently, one of my younger sisters, Sergeant Sharlene L. Harkins (pictured above with daughter, Amber) is serving in Iraq. Sharlene deployed from San Antonio, TX, leaving behind her only child – Amber, 12. I cannot express enough how proud we are of her, while, at the same time, being a little scared and sad. She never once displayed any signs of regret or fear. All she has ever said was that this is what she is trained to do. It seems strange that I, the older sister and the first of my siblings to enter the military, would now be on the sidelines. I should be the one but, instead, it's her. I often think of her as a young child in her kimono robe, holding our Yorkshire terrier, so sweet, so innocent. Then, there is my vision of her playing with her daughter and giving guidance. Somehow, it is difficult to transform that image into a soldier with a rifle, waiting for the enemy. It saddens me of the possibility that the next time I see her she may not be able to see me. “A Salute to those that serve so that we may be free. Maudie
