A couple months ago, when we left the Egg Harbor Township “Champions,” the winners of the South Jersey Alumni Extension of the National Society Black Engineers local Try-Math-A-Lon competition, we had no idea that their success story was just beginning.  The Champions dominated the Regional competition, which was held in Parsippany, NJ, just as they had the local competition.

This win allowed the team the opportunity to compete for the National Championship in Anaheim, CA.  The team studied fiercely even though their study time was cut short because of other obligations, which had to do with their school, but they stayed focused.  With the competition being held just a few days after the start of the US led war on Iraq, uncertainty began to show on the faces of the students. Parents began to show a great deal of concern for their children’s well-being and at one point the team was faced with having to compete with three instead of four members. At the last minute, one of the two members who had decided not to compete, changed his mind and the students were off.

The competition on the national level is a two-day competition unlike the one-day competition of the local and regional.  The competition on the national level is made up of the best and brightest students from the other five regions.  Though it is a tough competition, the Egg Harbor Township Champions came in a close second to a very impressive Region 4 team.

The Champions represented the South Jersey Alumni Extension of NSBE, Egg Harbor Township High School, and the entire South Jersey area very well and we the members of NSBE or very proud of them.

A special thanks to Devon Thompson who is responsible for preparing the students for the local, regional and national competitions.  Also a special thanks to Charles Odoom, who watched over and took care of the students while in Anaheim, Jensyl Guy for transporting the students from the airport safely and the other members of NSBE for their support.
