2003 Women's History Month a Huge Success

By Carolyn Pokres

The Federal Women’s Program (FWP) was established to assist in the elimination of barriers and the meaningful employment of women in the FAA workforce. Meaningful employment includes representation in each FAA occupation, at all grade levels. This was established by 1969 Executive Order 11478. In March of 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Message to the American people, encouraging the recognition and celebration of women’s historic accomplishments during March. And so, National Women’s History Month was born.

The William J. Hughes Technical Center’s Federal Women’s Program uses this month, in particular, to bring several training session to our employees. Through training and awareness, we all grow. This March the FWP held nine training and/or awareness sessions, and trained over 150 people. This number doesn’t include the “Let’s Get Physical” exercise series held every Tuesday and Thursday during the month from 11:30am to 12:00pm, and included another 50 to 100 employees. Special thanks go to Maudie Powell (ACF-001) and Phylis Schlegel (ACX-052), without whom there would have been no exercise program. Under their direction, a different exercise was offered each time, such as yoga, stair climbing, aerobic dancing, and power walking – something for everyone!

Norris Hite, Jr. (ACH-1), Rosanne Weiss (AAR-490), and Cathy Jaggard (ACB-710) deserve special mention and thanks from the FWP. Mr. Hite held three sessions during the month: Effective Management Skills, Effective Verbal Communications, and Effective Oral Communications. He brings his sense of humor and real-life skills to all his classes, and all participants enjoyed and learned from him. Ms. Weiss is always willing to help anyone she can, and jumps at the chance to help any diverse organization. She brings to us her expertise in Microsoft Access, and the FWP takes full advantage of her skills. This past month she held two classes in Access – one beginner and advanced. Because of our overwhelming response in sign-ups, Ms. Weiss conducted another class in April for those who had to be put on a waiting list in March. Ms. Jaggard held a “12 Steps to Success” training class toward the end of March, which was well attended and received rave reviews.  She has also agreed to give the workshop again for those employees unable to make the first.

Latasha Reddick (ACB-830), Women’s History Month chairperson, brought to the Center “Poetry and Prose.” This session showcased employees’ talents in the arts, and was a very emotional hour for me. I encourage everyone to look out for the next session and make a concerted effort to attend. It was a chance for the poets to express themselves to others, and for the audience (maybe a little too shy to express out loud) a chance to be involved in an introspective and enlightening session. Ms. Reddick recently graduated from Florida A&M University and is new to the FAA, and we applaud her for her initiative!

Lastly, the FWP sponsored a “Stress Relief Management” hour and a half, given by Sheila Rosen (nurse, case manager at Bacharach Hospital). Ms. Rosen came to the Tech Center last year and gave the same seminar. It was so popular then, that this year we had an overload of attendees. She is a fun and funny lady, who had us all ready to work another 8 hours at 3:00 pm because we were so de-stressed. As usual, Ken Beisel (ACX-054) volunteered to distribute flyers and help in any way he could. No wonder he won the “Unsung Hero” award last year. Thanks to Butch Dansby, Carl Genna, and Annette Harrell (ACX-60) for helping with the display in the Atrium; and to Stacie Gustray (ACX-044), Gayle Martin-Taylor (ACT-001), Nancy Matthews (ACX-051), Magda Colon (ACB-540), Linda Olivo (ACB-610), Cathy Bigelow (AAR-470), and Stacie Graves (AAR-470) – delegates who acted as point of contact for various training sessions.

We’ll see you again soon! Look for upcoming events, such as our annual luncheon scheduled in May, and our annual Wonder Woman contest.
