The William J. Hughes Technical Center is home to a team of some of the country's most knowledgeable experts in high-speed electronic and film imaging techniques. These techniques are used for documenting, and collecting data on, events or sequences of events that occur too fast for observation by conventional means. Areas of application include,  verification of product compliance with government specifications, payload impact studies, stress and fragmentation studies, observation and verification of the performance of emergency systems and equipment, and observation of the performance of materials designed to withstand terrorist attacks.

The specialized equipment available for visual instrumentation includes, high-speed 16mm film cameras capable of recording 500 frames per second, ultra-high-speed capable or recording up to 10,000 frames per second, and digital sequencers capable of tripping cameras and events within milliseconds of one another. The team is also supported by state-of-the-art video systems that may be custom-configured as required.
